We had a great experience working with Sustainable and could not be any happier with the results. Their aesthetic ideas were very creative and appealing, and their practical know-how and problem solving ability were invaluable when it came to the particular challenges with our site, such as access and water flow. It was obvious to me that the whole team, from Brett at the top, and all the way through, were very enthusiastic about what they were doing and saw it as much more than just a ‘job’.
The scope of the works that were completed for us included:
- Construction of an internal courtyard;
- Land clearing and contouring;
- The establishment of a small water retention pond;
- Erection of privacy screens; and
- The reinstatement of turf on any heavily trafficked areas.
Their commitment to the project both in the conception stage and delivery were excellent, we had a strict deadline which Sustainable were able to meet, and they proved they were able to draw on enough workers to ensure that the job was done.

For decades we’d enjoyed our ‘secret spot’ – getting there by 4WD and camping under the stars. As chance would have it, we discovered a freehold block of land that had come on the market. We wasted no time and soon it was ours. Over many years after that we thought about the future, and securing an architect and builder to serve our needs in a remote location. We met with many good architects. Some were ‘out there’ and some hadn’t worked with solar or on-site sewage treatment, but ‘would like to get into it’.
The trail eventually led us to Brett McKenzie and the Sustainable team. We were impressed by their organisation and ability to competently design, build and manage the project throughout. Sustainable designed and constructed our new Recipe Home at Boonah. Brett and his team at Sustainable have been very professional to deal with during the design and construction phase. They have provided the total solution for our property using an overall masterplan. We’re delighted with the work that Sustainable has done for us. We commissioned a holistic plan to rework our old 1960s house and garden. The design process was very helpful and consultative and the plan that was delivered met all our key requests: that it should be affordable, low maintenance and that it should use wherever possible, native fauna and recycled timber. The design solution to our front yard that you came up with is very clever indeed. Stage one has just been completed and we’re very happy with the results. The backyard was an unusable, weed covered wilderness. It has now been beautifully, and cleverly landscaped in a low maintenance and water-wise way; and we’re looking forward to seeing how it flourishes over the next few years as the plants and trees grow and spread out. Our kids have reclaimed it as a play area, which is very gratifying to us. You made the process very easy and we have already recommended you to some friends. We’re very much looking forward to proceeding with the next stages of our plan with you. You guys are first rate.

We designed an outdoor learning space that fits into the overall master plan strategy and combines the observed needs from the kids with multifunctional and safe outdoor learning facilities. The design also reflects the integration of solar gaining for lighting and water storage with gravity feed irrigation to make the space low maintenance and self sufficient… “I was extremely impressed with the fact that Sustainable came to the site, prior to starting, to observe the children playing in the area. This allowed them to come up with a design that was aesthetically beautiful yet practical and would remain beautiful in the future. Mt Crosby State School is, I feel, unique in that the children have gardens to play in, not just around, and Sustainable have captured this in their design. I have not heard of any other company taking the time to do this type of research.

I was very impressed with the quality and service of Sustainable. They recommended that we plant some trees around our pond to attract some honey birds.
